A report by News24 indicates that President Ramaphosa's head of security has a less-than-clean past.

Major General Wally Rhoode was charged for alleged involvement in a corrupt tender 6 years ago, and yet he brought the same company that is owned by his co-accused, Dalo Nala, on board to the CR17 Campaign.

According to the report, Rhoode, who is head of the Presidential Protection Unit (PPU), has links to the Zuma family.

In 2011, Nala and Rhoode were charged in relation to a R19 million tender the NPA (National Prosecuting Agency) awarded to Nala's company, Intense Protection and Tourism Services, in 2006.

However, in 2014, the NPA declined to prosecute them, and it is believed the death of an important witness played a role in this decision. Bulelwa Makeke, NPA spokesperson, has denied that prosecutors knew about the death.

Rhoode, who was head of security for the NPA in 2006, was accused of taking money from Nala to give his company the tender.

The accusations do not end there - in 2009, Rhoode stepped out as head of security for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the Mail and Guardian reported this was because he was linked to controversy with the appointment of Africa Strategic Asset Protection, to provide services for the 2009 Confederations Cup

We gathered that Rhoode claimed he resigned so he can look after his family's construction business.

After President Ramaphosa assumed office in 2018, Rhoode got appointed as head of the PPU and gained the rank of Major General.

This is where another claim is made against him. According to alleged leaked bank statements, Rhoode's appointment was followed by the hiring of Nala's company.

Intense Protection and Tourism Services were paid R8.4 million to protect VIP members of the CR17 campaign.

As if that wasn't enough, City Press reported earlier in 2019 that Rhoode failed to secure a top-secret security clearance because of troubles with SARS (the South African Revenue Services).
